No Special Exemptions from VCEA

Heavy industries shouldn't get to skip costs

HB 1430 (Patron: Del. Lee Ware, R-Powhatan) would exempt certain industrial customers categorized as "energy-intensive trade-exposed industries" from paying costs that the Virginia Clean Economy Act (VCEA) makes all customers pay.

Under HB 1430, a pilot program would grant exemptions to certain companies and those costs would be shifted onto other customers. Many of these companies claim they can't afford these costs if they are to successfully compete with foreign companies. However, many of those foreign companies operate in countries that don't have strong energy, climate and workforce laws.

We successfully defeated a similar attempt last year.

By opening up the VCEA, this bill could also lead to further amendments of VCEA, including by the Governor, so stopping this bill is important.
