With recent announcements by Gov. Youngkin and Amazon to create mega-data centers in Virginia, the GA must urgently address these potentially mega-harmful developments being offered significant tax incentives to locate here.
Sen. Petersen's common-sense SJ240 requires a study on the impacts of data centers on Virginia's environment, economy, energy resources, and ability to meet carbon-reduction goals. The GA at a minimum should promote careful planning to protect our citizens and natural and historic resources in siting these huge power and water users.
Sen. Petersen's SB1078 goes a step further to protect invaluable historic, cultural and natural resources. While data centers raise near-term local revenues, they can be disastrous to land and water resources, and can forever harm hallowed grounds. With SB1078, Virginia can promote local smart-growth zoning practices.
Currently, the state has absolutely no control over where data centers are sited, nor do data center advocates have any understanding of the impacts these proposals have on Virginia's climate goals, water resources, or land preservation efforts.
