Protect Expression of Gender Identity by Students

These are some of our most vulnerable students.

BACKGROUND

Transgender and gender non-conforming students are some of the most vulnerable in our population.

Forcing them to use an identity that they do not embrace is traumatic to them and is a reason for the high anxiety and even suicidal thoughts common in these students. By accommodating the requests of students to be seen by the identity that they embrace, we can make a big difference in their welfare.

Accommodating a name change without a court order seems the least adults can provide, but including these students in gender affirming activities is another way we can show a welcoming school environment for all students.
